Hey people~
First off...
Happy New Year~! (even though I know it's late already)

I spent my new year's eve at Port Dickson like I have been doing for almost my whole entire life...
Managed to get some really nice shots...
Perhaps one of the best photos I've taken was shot there also...

This trip was a rather interesting one...
Managed to get some nice light drawings...
Got a chance to shoot animals in the wild...
Got some great landscape shots...
It was my first time taking Nikki to the beach also...

Panaroma Tutorial

Finally got my new PC with good software's, and finally came back to upload some stuff.
Here's one I was doing for my friends assignment, panaroma. So I decided to try it. Here's how I did it.

I have Photostitch from Canon, but you still can buy the software.

Run it.

Then open the images.

After you've opened it,

arrange it, i did it by switching, means 12345 becomes 54321.

Now, let's start merging some pictures. Click on start.
And Photostitch will automatically merge it for you. But... doesn't look that proportional isn't it?

Click on display seams, so you can edit the seems between pictures.

It'll show a few yellow boxes.

Click on one to go to the editing window. Shown below.

By default, Photostitch would just specify one overlapping area. What you need to do to enhance the proportion of your picture is to specify important details and let Photostitch deal with the 'lining up'.

Here's an example. I want the tower to be correctly merged with the other picture, so i select it, and drag it to the other picture.
A few more would be good. I did three times more than this example below.
As you can see, its now straightened.
Do the same for the rest of the images, you'll end up with something like this.
As you can notice here, there are some mismatched merges, keep specifying overlaying areas, and specify the important areas only.
Once you're happy with it... (for me, after 15 tries....) save it.
Open it up in Photoshop. Use your brush tool, set to soft hardness, hold alt to bring up the colour extraction tool, there are going to be a few merge lines visible, so go to the side of the line, extract the colour beside it, and cover the line. Do this repeatedly as you go along the line. so the horizontal colours are similar. Making it seemed like you erased the line.
Then to further enhance the picture, I went to curves, and adjusted it. Check youtube for tutorials on this part.
Darkened the shadows, and boosted the highlights.
Then I went to vibrance adjustment.
Bring up the vibrance, but be careful not too much, if not it'll look oversaturated and unreal.Next I went to Shadow/Highlights adjustments. This helps boost the range even more.

This is defualt.

And here is the final thing. Super huge... my first panaroma. Try it yourself!

Jules' 10 Minute Photoshop Lesson: Selective Coloring

As per my title...
I'll be starting a series of simple Photoshop lessons that you (yes, you!) can use in editing your images...

Well...
Without further ado...
Let's start the first lesson~

Today I'll be teaching you guys how to do:

Selective Coloring

This technique will help make your subject stand out more...
This is an example what a picture will look like if the selective coloring technique is applied:

Looks complicated?
To be honest it's not actually...
In fact it's quite simple...
Just follow these simple steps and you should be able to do it:

1. Open your Photoshop CS3/CS4 or any other version of Photoshop.
(I'm using CS4)

2. Open your image file. (Don't need me to teach you how to open your image file right?)

3. Choose a subject that you wish to have its colors remain while the rest are in black and white. In this case mine would be the beer bottle and the cup.

4. Zoom in to an area of choice to make outlining the subject of choice easier. Hold 'Ctrl+Space Bar' and left click (hold it down as well), then drag the mouse til you see a box. (as pictured below)

5. Select the 'PEN' tool. This can be found on the toolbar on the left of the Photoshop window or you can just press 'P' on your keyboard. Also make sure that the 'Pen' tool has been selected to 'Paths' mode. (pictured below, marked by red circle)

6. Select a starting point where you want to start from by left clicking your mouse. A small square box should appear (as pictured below, marked by red circle). You will need to do this in order to select the subject.

7. Left click (don't let go of it) on a next point and drag the mouse around to get a curved line. Just left clicking alone will result in a straight line. The reason why we want to do curved lines is so that the final result won't appear rough around the corners/curved areas. Keep dragging the mouse around until you are satisfied with the outlining. (pictured below)

Read step 8 before proceeding to outline the whole subject.

8. Press and hold 'Alt' and click on the middle box. (as pictured below, marked by red circle)

9. Repeat step 6 and 7 until the desired subject is fully outlined. The way to tell if your subject has been fully outlined is that there are no more square boxes remaining. To fully outline your subject, just click back on the starting point where you started the outline. Make a curved line if necessary. (pictured below)

10. Right click on any part of the image and click on 'Make selection...'

11. A small window should appear on your screen now. Just change the settings (if required) to the same as the picture below and click 'Ok'.

12. Next, click on the 'Select' tab (found on the top of the Photoshop window) and click on 'Inverse' or you can just press and hold 'Shift+Ctrl+I' for the short cut.

13. Next, click on the 'Image' tab (found on the top of the Photoshop window), select 'Adjustments', and click on 'Black & White...' or press and hold 'Alt+Ctrl+Shift+B' for the shortcut. A window should appear for you to adjust as to how black or white a color should be. For me I like to use the 'Maximum Black' setting so that the subject stands out more. When you are done just click 'Ok'. (pictured below)

14. You are finished and ready to save your file~

Well.. i'll explain, a dyno does a simulation of a car

Outside, 1 run could cost up to RM 1k.

So... we're blessed :D Specially built for Diploma in Motorsports Technology

Day 2 of my photography outing with Richard @ KLCC was a very productive one~

We actually wanted to go up to the Skybridge today...
And there were tickets available...
But the earliest time available to go up was 6pm...
And I had to be back home by then...

So we decided not to go up to the bridge but just walk around the park AGAIN...
But this is where it gets interesting...
(you can just skip this part if you've already read about it at my personal blog)

There was this group of Malays (who were also photographers) asked whether we wanted to join them in their model photoshoot~
We were a bit hesitant at first...
But since this was a great opportunity to shoot some "real" models, get to know other photographers around Malaysia, learn some new things, and get some good exposure...
We decided to tag along...

It was a blessing in disguise...
If me and Richard had gone up the Skybridge we would've missed them...
They said they would call us if there is any event or photoshoot in the future~
So it was a good thing we didn't go up the Skybridge~

Anyway...

This was a shot I took when my friend took me out for park shooting.

Hi there, Juchiro here

Well, I'm the new guy here, partner of this 'leng chai' JuChong.

So I'll be sharing this blog with him.

Hmm.. it seems a little quiet this past 2 weeks..

That's why I'm here !! xD

( Sounds like I'm the replacement guy or the guy who fills the cracks *sobs*)

Anyway, enough of intro, lets get to the story..

We had this photoshoot trip and we planned to shoot sunset shots from the skybridge of KLCC on Thursday night. But there were no more tickets. So.. we just took night shots. But before the night comes. We went to the park for some nature shots.

Seems sooo interesting.... shiny ball....

This photo is actually at night.. really dark night. Thanks to ISO 12800 :) Its day again. But there's a lot of noise.

Probably the most successful heart shaped drawing that I have ever done...

I have finally done another shape besides the heart shape!

After picking up my brother...
We stopped at this traffic light...
I looked to my right and saw a perfect shot to take~

It's a view of the KLCC between two buildings~

The angle of this shot wasn't that nice though...
But taking this picture from inside a car means I have very little room to move about...
I was so tempted to just jump out of the car to get a better angle!

My D90 has grown bigger!
Bought myself a battery grip~!
Whooo~!

This battery grip is not an original product by Nikon though...
The brand is called Phottix...

Model of the battery grip is BP-D80

Here is my own review of the BP-D80~

Functions of this battery grip is exactly the same as the original Nikon MB-D80...
No complains there...
The shutter release button and the rubber grip doesn't feel as nice as Nikon's but that is not important...
The AE-L/AF-L button doesn't feel very nice also...
Other than that...
I'm very satisfied with the BP-D80~

And did I mention that ALL Phottix products come with a one year warranty and it's a 1-to-1 exchange~
*woots*

I only decided to buy this after reading some reviews about it...

Phottix is a highly recommended third-party brand by the way...
Lots of positive reviews on the net...

Now all I need is a second battery then can have longer shooting time~

My dad bought me a photography magazine...
It's the Digital Camera Magazine (Malaysia)...

This magazine has lots of tips and step-by-step image editing instructions...
It's quite cheap too...
It can be yours for only RM9...
I'm considering buying this every month from now onwards...
Lots of great tips for an amateur photographer like me~

The May issue featured an article - "25 Best Tips For Stunning Flower Pics"

I used some of the tips there when I was shooting some of my mom's flowers...

Tip: Compositional Skills
Placing the subject slap-bang in the middle of the frame rarely works well and can result in a flat boring image. Composing with the subject off center according to the rule of thirds can instantly give your images a professional look. Flowers need room to lean into the image, not out of it.

Tip: Just Add Water
It's possible to recreate the look of a dew-covered flower by careful use of a water spray. Adding a few drops of water can really help to bring your flower photographs to life.

Tip: Watch Your Backgrounds
The background that you choose to photograph a flower against can either make or break the final image. A plant photographed with a soft, uncluttered background can stand out; a distracting, messy background can easily ruin what could have been a great shot if you'd thought a bit more.

Tip: Experiment With Flash
Used in moderation, flash can help you produce impressive images, but be careful not to overdo it. A burst of fill-flash can help reduce contrast in an image by increasing light levels in shadow areas. A small ring flash can be used to produce a shadowless close-up images.

Tip: Shoot In Manual
If you'd rather take control than let your camera decide everything for you, then shoot in Manual mode. Shooting in manual enables you to choose the aperture and shutter combination that you want. Checking your histograms will show you if you need to change a setting in order to produce a correctly exposed image. Bright flowers can fool your camera into underexposing, so shooting in Manual and checking histograms can overcome this.

Made another new set of Bokeh filters...

A few of the shapes didn't really work out...
It was either poorly cut out or too big...

But there is one shape in this set that I really like~

This looked the best out of the whole set...Haunted Baskin Robbins~

Got myself a DigiKlear LensPen...
I won it when I went to Mid Valley last Saturday~
(more about it at my personal blog)
LensPen is a cleaning tool that cleans your camera lens effectively without damaging it...

I tried it out myself and I have to say...
It's quite impressive~
Works so much better than the cleaning kit I bought~
More about it here...

A word of advice though...
Should you want to purchase a LensPen...
Make sure you get an original one...

Though "pirated" ones are much cheaper...
Would you want to have your camera's lens(es) damaged?
I don't think so...
It's gonna cost you alot more to repair/replace the lens...

The LensPen is not some super expensive item...
It quite affordable...
You should be able find it in any camera shop...
It costs around RM38...

The one I'm using is designed for cleaning LCD screens...
But it works just as fine on my camera's lens...

On this end is the brush that is used for wiping off dust...
It can be retracted...

Here are some pictures that I took a few days back...

Was browsing through one of my friend's blog and I saw some really interesting pictures that he took...

I tried it out for myself...
Couldn't get it at first...
Then my friend told me that I needed to use a *rear-curtain sync flash...
And voila~

Success!
(these were just test shots so don't expect anything great)

*"Rear-curtain sync" is a flash mode(?) that sets the flash to fire just as the shutter is about to close. The flash mode(?) normally used is called "front-curtain sync" which fires the flash as soon as the shutter opens.

With that short fun fact...
I shall conclude this post...

The Bokeh Filter Upgrade~

I've "upgraded" my Bokeh filter from this:

This my own version of the "Sliding Bokeh Filter"~

This is very convenient when I want to change the shape...
When I was using the Bokeh filters with my S602 Zoom...
I would have to remove the cap, take out the current filter, reinsert another filter, and place the cap back on the lens...

But when I got my D90 I had to make my own cap...
The cap I used for my S602 Zoom was made from a...
Err...
Ribbon roll??
You know how toilet paper has that brown cylindrical thing in the middle to "hold" the tissue together?
Well that white transparent thing (picture above) was what "held" the ribbon together...

Anyway...
Getting back...
Since I had to make a new cap for my D90...
I decided to make a slider...

Changing the shapes is a lot faster now...
Saves me plenty of time...
Now my chances of missing a nice shaped Bokeh shot is lower~

Bokeh Bokeh Bokeh~

Was playing around with my Bokeh filter at my dad's office yesterday...
Got some really nice shots...
In my own opinion that is...
*hehehe*

Remember how I said in one of my older posts that the size of my cut-outs can be about 3cm...
I was wrong about that part...

I forgot that when my lens is zoomed all the way the aperture is automatically set to f/5.6 (it can go higher of course... but that's the lowest value when at maximum zoom)...
So if I divide 105mm by f/5.6...
I can only cut out a shape no bigger than 18mm...
I was a bit disappointed but..
Ah wells...

I needed to do some cropping with the shaped Bokeh shots...
If I uploaded the picture uncropped...
Well...
Let's just say it isn't that nice...
At least the shapes turn out~ =]

So all the shaped Bokeh pictures that you see/will see from this post onwards has most probably been cropped before...

I found out that the Bokeh filter can be used with not only lights but plants too~

This was before the filter was applied...

For the next 6 pictures...
I used a function on the D90 that allows me to set the color of the white balance...
Thus giving me different colored shaped Bokehs...

There is this patterned window at my dad's office...
And when the sun starts to set and shines its light on to it...
The patterns on the window reflects different colors of the spectrum...
I thought it would go really well with Bokeh effects and here are my results~
I tried to get the colors of the rainbow on to a single heart shaped Bokeh...
But this was the best I could get...This shot would've been nicer if there were more hearts around...

Come to think of it...
I haven't showed you guys what my D90 looks like with the new Bokeh filter on...

The set came with cotton buds, a bottle of cleaning solution, a stack of lens cleaning tissues, and a wiping cloth...

I find the cleaning solution rather useless...
Because every time I use it to clean the UV filter it seems to make it worse!!
Maybe I'm just not doing it right...
Help anyone?

Went to visit my grandmother's grave today...
We normally do this every year with my dad's side of the family...
(this grandmother is my dad's mother)

My niece suddenly jumped in front of the camera...

We went for lunch at some restaurant recommended by my cousin...

And she asked me if I'd like to take pictures of some antique stuff...

After lunch I followed my younger brother down to One Utama for some Japanese Mother's Day thing (can't remember what it was called)...
There was supposed to be some cosplay event also...
But hardly saw any cosplayers...

Didn't really take any photos there...

I later noticed that there was some fashion thingy going on at another part of 1U (short for One Utama)...
I didn't go to the floor where it was being held though...
Too many people...

When I looked at the fashion show from the upper floor...
There was this horde of photographers taking pictures!
I'm guessing some of them were from the press since they had some tag around their neck...
Here is what they are doing when there are no models cat walking...
(One guy is frowning... See if you can spot him...)

And when the models come out...
Flashes are fired all over the place!
(I wonder how do models tahan all those flashes)

I also attempted to take some pictures of the models from the floor above...
Here is the one and only successful shot that I managed to take...

I still have yet to go for a photography outing...
Now that my SAT is out of the way...

Failtography!

As promised...
Here are the pictures I took during "Fellowship Night"...

I had to edit most of the pictures though...
Didn't set my camera's settings properly...

I totally forgot about setting the ISO to a higher value...
So most of my pictures were either underexposed or blur because of a slow shutter speed...
And I didn't adjust the white balance properly...
The "Picture Control" function wasn't set properly as well...

*Aih*
I failed in my photography assignment today...
Nevermind...
I shall learn from this failure!
*RAWRR*

I edited the pictures using Picasa...
I had to use the "Warmify" effect on Picasa to touch up the skin tones...
The "Warmify" effect did wonders for the skin tones...
But unfortunately it destroyed the rest of the picture...
I really need to learn how to use Photoshop!

Olympus OM101 PowerFocus~

My dad said he had a SLR camera before...
So I went to the store room to search for it...

Introducing the Olympus OM101 PowerFocus~

Sadly this SLR camera is already spoilt...
The shutter is jammed and both the lenses have fungus in them...
The external flash doesn't work too...

I was actually kinda hoping that the external flash is still functioning...
But I later realized that the contact points on the flash are placed differently from the external flash slot on my D90...
Ah wells~

The reason it's called an "SLR" and not a "DSLR" is because it runs on film...
"SLR" stands for "Single Lens Reflex"...
"DSLR" stands for "Digital Single Lens Reflex"...
You wouldn't use film for a digital camera now would you? (you can't in the first place!)

The sad part about film cameras is that you can't review your pictures on the spot...
You'd need to get it printed out then only you can see how the picture turned out...
And buying film and getting the photos printed isn't cheap...
That's why back in the days when your parents were still young...
Photography was considered an expensive hobby (still is actually)...

Anyways...
Let's take a closer look at the kit...

If I'm not mistaken...
This should be a macro lens since it says 50mm at the side...
A shot with the 50mm lens attached to the body...

Next up we have the 135mm lens...
The "inscriptions" on the lens is so different (at least I think it is) from the modern lenses that we have today...

There is one funny thing about the 135mm lens...
The front part of it can be extended (picture below)...
I'm still trying to figure out what it is/what it does...
A lens hood perhaps?
This is what I believe to be the command dial(s) for adjusting the aperture (upper dial) and shutter speed (lower dial)...

I took more pictures using my D90 yesterday...
Played around with more functions...

Still haven't got the chance to take pictures of people yet...
But tonight is Fellowship Night...
It's some event (not sure if you can call it an event) in my church where all the cell groups gather together for well... Fellowship~
So yeah~
Great opportunity for me to test out the D90 with human subjects~

I've also been asked by one of the church members to be the photographer for their daughter's birthday party...
But this is not confirmed yet...
Hopefully they "hire" me la~
(I'm not getting paid though... I'm just doing it for exposure...)

Another example of the "Cross Screen" Effect...
I used 8-pointed stars this time...

I edited this image using the "Fish Eye" effect...

I gave the picture a stronger blue and this is what I came up with...Looks like as if it is floating on water~

Picture of a fountain using a slow shutter speed...

I was checking out the "Repeating Flash" function...
Didn't understand how it works at first...
But after some experimenting...
Here is what I came up with...
What the "Repeating Flash" function does is this...
It repeatedly fires the flash for a set amount of times (the amount of times the flash fires can be set) when the shutter-release button is pressed...

Say for example this picture above...
It was taken with a shutter speed of 1.6" and the flash was set to fire 5 times...
As I pressed the shutter-release button...
I moved the camera in a circular motion thus capturing the objects at 5 different points...

But the amount of times you set the flash to fire may differ (not sure if this is the right word to use) depending on the shutter speed and the frequency of the flash (this can be adjusted also)...
Say for example if I use a shutter speed of 1/20 and the flash is set to repeat 10 times...
The time gap there may be too short for the flash to fire 10 times...
Then again this depends on the frequency of the flash that was set...

Hope I managed to explain that clearly...
It's much easier to explain it in person~

I have gone from this...A Fujifilm Finepix S602 Zoom...

......

To this...A Nikon D90~!!!
My brand new DSLR baby!!!

As Sydney would say: Big ass camera with a big ass lens~
Bought this D90 kit from a warehouse sale around PJ...
The D90 kit came with alot of stuff...
Such as...

A travel kit...
A closer look inside the travel kit...
I use this to keep the battery charger and the lens/body/viewfinder cap...

A camera bag...

A lens hood (right)...
The thing on the left is a UV filter...
I had to purchase that separately...

D90's user manual and driver installation...

Of course the D90 kit came with a camera lens as well...
The lens model is the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR lens...

Other miscellaneous items include:
AV cable, USB cable, battery charger, viewfinder cap, camera strap...

It came with lots of free stuff too~
Such as a tripod (TR-69), mini photo frames, another camera bag, 3 pens, umbrella, 4GB SD card, a cap...

The joy of buying things at warehouse sales~
So much freebies~
Ahh~

For the price of RM4.1k...
I'd say it was a pretty good buy~
Original retail price was RM4.7k minus the freebies...

I only paid RM3k though...
My Dad paid the balance...

The D90 has so many functions wei!
I'm at a loss with what to do with it!
Need to slowly get used to the camera...

The pictures are actually much sharper when I took them...
But since I had to resize them the quality has dropped...
But it's still quite good as compared to my s602 Zoom...
And the photos haven't been edited unless specified...

This is called a zoom burst effect for those of you who don't know...

A personal favorite...

As you may have noticed...
I was playing around with the zoom burst effect alot...
This was one effect I couldn't create with the s602 Zoom...

I used the "Color Balance" function on my camera to edit this image after I took it...
It originally looked like this...
Pretty neat eh?
Considering it's all being done from within the D90 itself...

My old Bokeh filters still works on the D90...
But the result is only a small portion of the background can be seen...
This picture was taken in maximum zoom...
Looks like I'll have to redo all my filters!
But at least now I can cut out shapes as big as 3cm~

A personal favorite...

This picture was edited using the "Filter Effects" function...
This is called "Cross Screen" effect...
Here is what the picture looked like before...I can select the number of points (between 4, 6, or 8) the "stars" may have...
I can also change the length and angle of the points...
This is one of my favorite functions of the D90...

A personal favorite...*note to self and others*
Try not to do these kind of shots too often...
Looking directly into the sun is NOT good for the camera's lens and definitely NOT good for the eyes...
Best is to wear sunglasses when taking these kind of shots...
But still don't do it too often...
Playing around with depth of field...
Notice the difference in the point of focus?

Another example of the "Cross Screen" effect...
